My paintings reflect experiences, memories, personal connections and often visceral responses rather than direct representations.
Living in the heart of England my local landscape includes bridle paths and drovers’ roads, ancient burial sites and stone circles, tracks and old hollow ways. Walking these well-worn paths, stopping to look listen and draw, I feel totally connected to the natural world, the earth and sky. Capturing that moment is the essence of my work. Using written notes as well as drawings to record that changing, moving place and time I can then recreate that sensation on canvas in the studio.
I am connected too, to the paraphernalia of my everyday life. Vessels, tools, tables and chairs. I create still life paintings which express my fascination with their shape and colour, composition and form. Semi-abstract, with flattened perspective and a mixed media application, the works finally represent the sense of the objects they reference.
I use a mixed media, multi-layered approach and water-based acrylic paints on large and small canvasses, boards, and paper, incorporating collage as well as print-making techniques in some pieces.
In Martin Gayford’s book ‘Man with a Blue Scarf’ (Thames and Hudson) Lucien Freud discusses painting while Martin sits for a portrait. Freud says that for him ‘each painting is an exploration into unknown territory’.
I know exactly what he means, and that is what drives each painting on.
